EuroNCAP have adopted a Full Width Frontal Deformable Barrier (FWDB) to assess low-speed frontal impacts of passenger vehicles at 35km/h. The EuroNCAP test protocol is expected to be introduced in 2026.
This barrier is based on the Cellbond FWDB, intended for the assessment of Microcars and Heavy Quadricycles (Vehicle Category L7). It has featured in the EuroNCAP Test Protocol since 2014.
In 2001 Cellbond developed their original FWDB with the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL). This was part of the European Working Groups VC-Compat Project. It was designed to measure the compatibility of vehicle fronts, their aggressivity or partner protection. It was also assessed by NHTSA and FIMCAR. It is not part of a standard current regulation.
