The Cellbond team was delighted to be Gold Sponsors of IRCOBI Conference 2023, which was held from 13-15 September 2023 at the historic Cambridge Union Society.
The International Research Council on Biomechanics of Injury is a leading group in injury biomechanics and vehicle safety research. IRCOBI Council members come from all parts of the globe, reflecting the international strengths of many organisations. Cellbond was honoured to be able to host, on the Council’s behalf, the 2023 Conference. Through the annual scientific conference, training courses, and other activities, the IRCOBI Council provides an academically rigorous forum for the dissemination of the latest research into injury causation and protective systems.
Since its first conference in 1973, IRCOBI has played a pioneering role in the subject and has been the forum of choice for the publication of much seminal research in injury biomechanics, field accident data, protective systems, and safety legislation. While the research domain primarily concerns automotive biomechanics it is increasingly covering a wider range of injury causation. Passive safety research has provided many of the most significant safety developments in recent decades and cars now offer considerably higher levels of protection than previously. Despite the nascence of active safety systems, there are still many more opportunities for further improvements in injury prevention, but further research is needed.
Sessions included Field Data Analysis, Head and Brain Injuries, Vulnerable Road Users, Anthropomorphic Test Devices (ATD), Population Heterogeneity, Human Body Models, Spinal Biomechanics, High Energy Trauma, Sports Injuries, Safety Restraints, Head Injuries and Helmets, Tissue Mechanics, Volunteer testing and Muscle Biomechanics.
Cellbond’s founder and Chairman, Dr. Mike Ashmead, OBE, had the honour of being invited by the Council to open proceedings. Mike and his team of expert engineers presented their latest ATD developments, the THOR-05F, aPLI, Q10, and WorldSID-50M to delegates. He also funded transport to enable student delegates to visit iMET, Cellbond’s state-of-the-art headquarters in Huntingdon, so that they could inspect the newly furbished ATD Test Facility.
The 2024 IRCOBI Europe conference will be held in Stockholm, Sweden, from September 11 to September 13, at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology. We look forward to seeing you there.
